Columbus Monument, Barcelona

The Monumento a Colón or Columbus Monument stands by the harbour at the bottom of the Rambla del Mar. The 7.2m (24ft) bronze statue of Christopher Columbus stands on top of a 40m (131ft) tall column, and was created for the Exposición Universal de Barcelona held in 1888.

Columbus' connection to Barcelona is that he reported to Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand V in Barcelona on 15th March 1493 after his first trip to the new continent.

He is said to be pointing to the Americas, when in fact he is really just pointing to the sea in general.
